Grief Relief Support-Grief Frequently Asked Questions FAQ on website www.griefreliefsupport.com

Am I Normal?

Grief affects everyone differently. You may experience intense or unusual emotions during your time of grief, or you might feel as though you don't belong.

A grief response can range from large upheavals and pains to feelings of numbness and disconnection. It's more important to recognize that this range is possible, and seeking support is OK.

How long is this grief going to last?

Everyone experiences grief differently, and there's no guarantee that it'll go away after a month or even a year. It's hard to predict how each person or family will deal with loss in reality. People might give you advice about how long you should grieve.

It's normal to feel like you're on a rollercoaster of emotions when you're grieving after a loss, with some gradual improvements interrupted by setbacks. The grief process will differ for everyone, depending on what you're going through at the moment.

How do I get over this loss?

It's not about "getting over" a loss, but about slowly integrating a new reality into your life. Support and skills are available to help you.

Find an understanding grieving community, as well as care for your own wellness.

What can I do to support someone who's grieving?

Recognize that a grieving individual is undergoing a unique type of loss that cannot be "fixed" with simple solutions or platitudes. Attempting to make them feel better with clichés or premature reassurances may not be helpful and could even be counterproductive.

When supporting someone who is grieving, often the most meaningful gesture is to be present and accepting of their grieving process. They may need to talk and find comfort in sharing their emotions, or they may prefer quiet moments of reflection. Some may find solace in physical activities that distract or provide an outlet for their emotions.

It's also valuable to remind them of additional resources and support services available, such as counseling services or support groups on campus. These resources can offer specialized assistance and a supportive community for those navigating grief.

What do we mean by anniversary effects or grief triggers?

A grief trigger is anything that strongly reminds you of your loss or loved one. Anniversary effects, on the other hand, describe the heightened feelings of grief experienced during special occasions like holidays, birthdays, or the anniversary of the loss.

Even joyous occasions can trigger grief, such as missing your loved one during milestones like graduations or family gatherings. Sometimes, small and unexpected things like a familiar song, scent, or taste can also serve as grief triggers.

We advise those navigating grief to be intentional about setting aside time for remembrance on significant occasions. It's normal to experience grief triggers, and it's okay for memories of your loved one to persist.

Engaging in grounding exercises, meditation, or journaling can be helpful for processing emotions, identifying triggering moments, and celebrating cherished memories. These activities can aid in navigating grief triggers and finding moments of peace amidst the emotional journey of loss.

Can grief become unhealthy or dangerous?

Loss may occur in situations that have higher risk for negative complications, or can overwhelm someone’s ability to cope. Sometimes life factors can intensify the stress upon a griever, such as health issues, economic stress, or lack of social support.

When a griever is unable to function adequately, or does not feel any improvement even after a prolonged grieving period, or becomes clinically depressed or impaired, then it’s time to consult with a professional for supportive interventions.

Grief can also become dangerous if a person tries to cope with loss in an unconstructive manner such as excessive substance use or reckless behaviors.
